Authors whose articles are accepted for publication receive a complimentary copy and the electronic file without cost. Authors are offered the opportunity to order additional copies at rates quoted by the printer.
Manuscript Preparation
Manuscripts for consideration should be presented in 12-point font, double-spaced, with consecutively numbered notes in a separate section following the text. In matters of style, the Quarterly adheres to the Chicago Manual of Style (17th ed.). Manuscripts should be submitted by e-mail attachment or on a CD, preferably in Microsoft Word format. Proposed illustrations should be submitted initially in low-resolution e-mail attachments or photocopied form.
Submission Length Guidelines
Our current guidelines for academic articles are approximately 10,000 words maximum, including footnotes. The standard SCQ research article typically ranges between 8,000 and 10,000 words, inclusive of footnotes. Shorter submissions are also welcome. Public history essays are generally around 5,000 words, including footnotes. Short essays, such as Community Voices essays, should be no longer than 3,000 words including footnotes, although some flexibility in word count may be considered in certain cases. Authors are encouraged to ensure that all submissions adhere to these word limits unless prior arrangements have been made with the editorial team.
